Berlin search engine that funds tree planting and restoration with its profits
About
Ecosia is a Berlin-based search engine company (Ecosia GmbH) launched in December 2009 by Christian Kroll. It funds tree planting and ecosystem restoration carried out by local partner organizations using its advertising profits, publishes monthly financial reports, became Germany's first certified B Corp in 2014, and in 2018 transferred shares to the Purpose Foundation so that the company cannot be sold or pay out profits. Its 2024 roundup reports planting in 38 countries, with new work in Togo, Vietnam and the Netherlands.
