## About

Komaza is a forestry company based in Kilifi, Kenya, founded in 2006 by Tevis Howard. Instead of owning plantations it partners with smallholder farmers who provide land and labour, while Komaza supplies seedlings, a farm-management platform, harvesting and a market for the wood. The company operates in Coastal and Central Kenya and has registered a carbon project with Verra. It describes itself as the largest forestry company in Kenya without owning a plantation.

## Programs

- **Smallholder microforestry** — Agroforestry: Farmers plant Komaza-supplied seedlings on underused land, manage them with a mobile platform, and sell the harvested wood back to Komaza for processing. https://komaza.com/growing/
- **Verra-registered carbon project** — Carbon offset planting: Carbon removals from the smallholder woodlots are registered as VCS project 2623 on the Verra registry. https://registry.verra.org/app/projectDetail/VCS/2623

## Metrics

> Note: Komaza's website shows 8,000,000 trees planted with 25,000 farmers and 9,500 hectares of added tree cover, with no date. The same figures appear in a Mirova investor announcement published 1 December 2022, and the page describes the company as 16 years old (it was founded in 2006), so the counts are as of late 2022. In November 2020 the company reported just over 6 million trees.

| Metric | Year | Value | Cumulative | Program | Confidence | Source |
|---|---|---:|---|---|---|---|
| Hectares restored | 2022 | 9,500 | yes (to date) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://komaza.com/) Homepage: 'We have increased total tree cover in Coastal and Central Kenya by 9,500 ha'; undated page. Dated to 2022 on the same basis as the tree count: identical figure in Mirova's 1 Dec 2022 announcement and '16 years in business' on the page |
| Trees planted | 2020 | 6,000,000 | yes (to date) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/news/east-africa/komaza-support-commercial-tree-farming-3211844) The EastAfrican, 27 Nov 2020: founder Tevis Howard quoted that the partnership with 25,000 farmers 'has seen over six million trees planted in Kenya'. Company claim relayed by press, not audited |
| Trees planted | 2022 | 8,000,000 | yes (to date) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://komaza.com/) Homepage counter: '8,000,000 trees planted' with 25,000 farmers; the page is undated. Dated to 2022 because the same three figures (25,000 farmers, 8,000,000 trees, 9,500 ha) appear in Mirova's investor announcement 'Mirova renews its support to Komaza...' published 01/12/2022 (mirova.com news listing, https://www.mirova.com/en/news?page=27), and the same homepage says '16 years in business' (founded 2006) |

Confidence: self-reported is the organization's own published figure; independently verified means a third party confirmed it; estimated means TreeRM derived it and the note says how.
