## About

Trees For Houston is a nonprofit founded in 1983, originally as the Live Oak Society, that plants, protects, and promotes trees throughout greater Houston. It runs tree plantings along freeways, parkways, and in parks and schools, free tree adoption events, a tree donation program, and its own nursery operations across 19 counties. In February 2026 the organization ceremonially planted its one millionth tree, a live oak in Sam Houston Park.

## Programs

- **Tree Adoption** — Tree adoption & giveaways: Free tree adoption events for Houston-area residents.
- **Trees for Schools** — Urban forestry: Plants trees on school campuses in the Houston region.
- **Nursery operations** — Nurseries & seedlings: Grows trees at its own nursery for plantings and distributions.

## Metrics

> Note: Trees For Houston publishes no annual report. Its About page states that it plants more than 90,000 trees a year, a rate it reached in the 2024-25 season, and its 2023-24 season total of 101,000 counts trees and understory plants together.

| Metric | Year | Value | Cumulative | Program | Confidence | Source |
|---|---|---:|---|---|---|---|
| Trees planted | 2024 | 101,000 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://thekatynews.com/tag/trees-for-houston-plants-a-record-101000-trees-and-understory-species-in-150-zip-codes-in-the-greater-houston-area-during-2023-2024-planting-season/) Trees For Houston press release dated June 24 2024, republished by The Katy News: 'a record 101,000 trees and understory species planted' across 150 zip codes in the 2023-2024 planting season (473 plantings and 165 giveaway events per Houston Style Magazine's coverage of the same release). Count includes understory plants. |
| Trees planted | 2025 | 90,000 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.treesforhouston.org/about) About page: 'more than 90,000 annually' (undated; accessed Nov 2026). Rice University's Kinder Institute Urban Edge, as relayed by Planetizen (Feb 2026), attributes the 90,000+ rate to the 2024-25 planting season, so the figure is recorded as 2025. |
| Trees planted | 2026 | 1,000,000 | yes (to date) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.treesforhouston.org/) Homepage: 'We've planted more than 1,000,000 trees'; Tree #1,000,000 ceremonially planted Feb 5 2026 |

Confidence: self-reported is the organization's own published figure; independently verified means a third party confirmed it; estimated means TreeRM derived it and the note says how.
