Training smallholder farmers in Africa to plant Forest Gardens that restore land and livelihoods

About

Trees for the Future (TREES) was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland. It trains smallholder farmers in East and West Africa to plant agroforestry 'Forest Gardens', typically about one hectare of mixed trees, crops and living fences, over a four-year programme. Its 2025 impact report covers Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda and states that the Senegal and Mali projects would close by the end of 2025 with a focus shifting to East Africa.

What they run

Four-year training programme in which smallholder farmers convert roughly one hectare into a diverse agroforestry 'Forest Garden' of trees, crops and living fences.
