Community-based landscape restoration and reforestation across Africa, Asia and Latin America
About
Eden: People+Planet (formerly Eden Reforestation Projects) began in 2005 near Hawassa, Ethiopia, and employs local community members to plant and protect mangrove and dry-deciduous forests. It reports working in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Nepal, Honduras and the Philippines. In June 2024 the organization renamed itself and shifted from large-scale tree-planting counts toward carbon-eligible, landscape-scale restoration financed by blended philanthropic and carbon-market funding; in November 2024 it ended its partnership with its implementing partner in Madagascar. Its 2022-2023 report cites over 1 billion trees planted by end of 2022, while its current About page cites over 500 million.
What they run
Carbon-eligible landscape restoration project across 394,000 hectares and 40 villages in Tanzania's Rubeho Mountains, financed through blended philanthropic and carbon-credit funding under a 40-year commitment.
